Does Fame Really Bring Happiness?

Recently on MTV, there was a star-bio on Justin Timberlake. While watching the show with a friend of mine, she said to me, ＂Look at his luxurious car and fancy home. It would be so nice to live a celebrity life.＂Her comments got me thinking. Is the life of a celebrity really filled with happiness? Does fame and fortune bring joy to one’s life? Most people, regardless of financial or social status, struggle with sadness, disillusionment and addictions. Perhaps celebrities struggle even more than we do. They may actually be prone to more bouts of unhappiness and even despair than regular people. According to an American author Jib Fowles, who wrote Star Struck: Celebrity Performers and the Public, celebrities are four times more likely to commit suicide than an average person.

We’ve all heard of a few celebrity struggles: Kate Moss was addicted to drugs and released last year from a rehab centre. Actress Lee Eun-joo was severely depressed before she committed suicide. And only a few days ago, singer/actress Unie killed herself at her home in Incheon.

Personally, I think such celebrities find happiness hard to hold on to. For a celebrity, there are no secrets. People love reading about the gaffes and gossip of the rich and famous; the more embarrassing and scandalous the better.
Celebrities may also lose touch with who they really are and what they really think and like. Knowing that the world perceives you inaccurately, or not knowing who you really are, must be a disturbing feeling. It is very possible that some celebrities are bewildered by their fame, knowing that they’re not perfect and not as great as their fans think they are. Fame, without a doubt, has its benefits, but it seems like a fairly stressful existence. Hopefully, most celebrities are in the business because they genuinely love the job. And I wish there won’t be anymore tragedy in the entertainment world.
