actors do not become the characters they play. you can’t, in reality, be anybody other than yourself. neither can i. i can’t be you, and you can’t be me, and neither of us can be hamlet. but both of us understand revenge in our own ways, and therein lies the secret of how you and i can play hamlet. our performances would be similar in that we both say shakespeare’s lines, but what you think makes hamlet behave the way he does is not the same as what i think. that’s why __________________. the fun in acting is to play characters that are different from yourself because, when you do, you are telling an audience what you understand about this character.
