Geographers and historians look somewhat differently at events throughout the past. To geographers, “history” is a recording of various past processes and events. Basically, they are interested in learning more about anything that has contributed to the formation of Earth’s varied places, features, and conditions, both physical and human. Historians, on the other hand, tend to emphasize individuals, events, and dates. In fact, many historians insist that “history” begins with _________________________________. Inasmuch as few Amerindians had written languages, they would have no history in this narrow view! Can you imagine trying to understand present-day Latin America without knowledge of its native peoples and their many contributions? In this chapter, you will travel back through the corridors of time in order to better understand Colombia’s past and how it helped shape the present.
