The desire to eradicate malaria originated in the 1950s and 60s, when the disease was

common in the United States and Europe.

At that time, scientists initiated a major effort to rid the world of malaria, using the

insecticide DDT. While the use of DDT in the 1960s did lead to a significant reduction in

the incidence of malaria, scientists learned, within the following decade as the disease

resurged, that mosquitoes could become resistant to DDT. This early effort to eliminate

malaria from the world has since been considered as one of the biggest failures in the

history of the fight against the disease
