Online game addiction among youngsters has been a huge problem in society. Finally, the government has announced measures to control and prevent online game addiction. One of the impositions is a midnight curfew.
The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism 문화체육관광부 recently told the press that it will be implementing a series of countermeasures starting from the end of this year.
The highlight of the various measures announced is the restriction of teenagers from logging on to certain online game sites after midnight. The subjects of the new curfew will be the players of popular games created by Nexon Corporation, the nation’s top online game maker.
Although the government hasn’t disclosed full details on the new countermeasures, skepticism is rising in both the game industry and the general public. PC rooms are legally prohibited to allow an underage customer in after 10 p.m. Thus, the new regulations will have no effect. Furthermore, such measures can be dealt with if young gamers decide to log on through their parents’ ID.
Game makers have been asked to introduce fatigue systems and selective shutdowns. The fatigue system is where disadvantages in game play are imposed when the player plays beyond the advised playing time limit
