로마의 지배가 시작될 때 이탈리아는 숲이 빽빽하였다.

❸ by the end of the roman imperium, however, italy had been stripped of forest cover.

목재가 일반 시장에서 판매되었고, (산림이 벌채된) 그 땅은 농경지와 목초지로 바뀌었다.

❺ the cleared soil was rich in minerals and nutrients and provided substantial production yields.
개간된 토양은 미네랄과 영양분이 풍부하였고 상당한 양의 농작물을 산출하였다.

❻ unfortunately, deforestation left the soil exposed to harsh weather.
유감스럽게도, 산림 벌채는 토양이 거친 날씨에 노출되게 했다.
