the ability to learn and remember information about the world around us and our experiences in it is a key cognitive ability that we all share. remarkably, we retain millions of pieces of information, sometimes with ease and sometimes with tremendous effort. most people have no difficulty remembering a birthday party during their youth. what may stand out vividly are the taste and color of the cake, the friends who attended, and some gifts. if we pick a salient event such as a birthday party, we will be amazed by how much we can recall about that special day. but what about the birthday party from the year before or the year after? or what we did the next day?
