In Russia, for example, there is one type of tiger called Amur tigers
because their homeland is the area near the Amur River.
In the middle of the 20th century, Amur tigers were in danger of extinction.
There were fewer than 50 left.
Thanks to a strict program by the Soviet government, the numbers
went back up to about 400 by 1990.
That successful program, however, is only one happy page in a long, sad story.
During the same time, the tigers in Korea and China were reduced to
only a handful.
And the effect on the Amur tiger did not last.
When the Soviet government lost power, hunters killed the tigers again,
and by 1994, there were only about 200 left.
Now, Amur tigers are again the focus of an international effort to save them,

but the future is uncertain.
