in 1662, a businessman opened a company that provided a portable lantern service.
men carrying lanterns were placed at various points in paris.
when parisians wanted to go out at night, all they had to do was go to one of these places.
then, a lantern man would take them to any place in paris. parisians loved this new service.
however, the service was not cheap and did not last long. paris went back to being a dark city again.
after the lantern service failed, the king decided to take matters into his own hands.
